Why Do Some Countries Drive on the Left?

The historical reason is largely feudal and military. In medieval Europe, most people were right-handed — riding on the left meant your right (sword) hand was closest to oncoming traffic and potential threats. This convention became law in Britain in 1835 under the Highway Act. British colonial influence spread left-hand driving to large parts of the world.
The US, France and most of continental Europe drive on the right, largely due to Napoleonic influence — Napoleon was left-handed and preferred right-side travel, and French military convention spread this across Europe.

What UK Drivers Need to Know When Driving Abroad

  • In EU countries (France, Spain, Germany, Italy etc.) you drive on the right — the opposite of the UK
  • In Ireland, Cyprus and Malta you drive on the left — same as UK
  • Hire cars in most countries are left-hand drive if they drive on the right — a right-hand-drive UK car can be used in most left-drive countries
  • Headlight beam deflectors are required by law in many EU countries if driving your UK right-hand-drive car — they prevent dazzling oncoming traffic
  • International Driving Permit (IDP) required in some countries — check GOV.UK foreign travel advice for your destination
  • Travel insurance should include breakdown and motor legal expenses cover for driving abroad
