UK Speed Camera Tolerances 2026: How Much Over the Limit Before You Are Caught?

Speed camera tolerances are one of the most searched driving topics in the UK — and one of the most misunderstood. Going even 1mph over the speed limit is technically illegal. But most UK police forces apply a threshold before triggering a fine. Here is what you need to know.
Verdict 2026
Standard UK tolerance: 10% + 2mph above the limit (guideline, not a legal right)  |  Minimum fine: £100 + 3 points  |  NIP arrives: within 14 days  |  Speed awareness course: £80–£100  |  Maximum fine: £1,000 (£2,500 on motorway)

The Standard UK Tolerance: 10% + 2mph

Speed limitTolerance bufferApproximate trigger point
20 mph10% (2mph) + 2mph = 4mph24 mph
30 mph10% (3mph) + 2mph = 5mph35 mph
40 mph10% (4mph) + 2mph = 6mph46 mph
50 mph10% (5mph) + 2mph = 7mph57 mph
60 mph10% (6mph) + 2mph = 8mph68 mph
70 mph10% (7mph) + 2mph = 9mph79 mph
Critical caveat: This is a guideline, not a legal right. Individual police forces set their own thresholds. The Metropolitan Police uses 10% + 2mph. Any speed over the limit is technically an offence.

What Happens When a Speed Camera Catches You?

  • NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution): Sent to registered keeper within 14 days
  • Section 172 notice: Return within 28 days — identifies who was driving
  • Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN): £100 + 3 points, or offer of speed awareness course
  • Court summons: Issued automatically if speed significantly over the limit

Speeding Fine Bands 2026

Band BMedium range (e.g. 41–50mph in 30)100% of weekly income4–6 pointsPossible 7–28 days
Band CHigh range (e.g. 51mph+ in 30)150% of weekly income6 pointsPossible 7–56 days

Speed Awareness Courses

For minor Band A offences, police may offer a speed awareness course instead. Conditions: you have not attended one in the last 3 years; it is at the discretion of the police force. Cost: £80–£100, takes a day. Completion = no fine, no points, no DVLA record. However it may still need to be declared to some employers.
Verdict 2026
The standard UK speed camera tolerance is 10% + 2mph — meaning most cameras will not trigger until 35mph in a 30 zone. But this is a guideline, not a right. If caught, expect a NIP within 14 days, a £100 minimum fine and 3 points. Minor offences may be offered a speed awareness course instead. 3 points typically raises car insurance by 10–30%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the speed camera tolerance in the UK?
Most UK police forces use a guideline of 10% + 2mph above the speed limit before issuing a penalty. This is discretionary, not a legal right. Any speed above the limit is technically an offence.
How long do I have before a speeding ticket arrives?
You should receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) within 14 days of the offence. You then have 28 days to return the Section 172 form identifying the driver.
Can I contest a NIP arriving after 14 days?
The 14-day rule applies to police making reasonable efforts to send it. Delays from postal issues or address changes do not invalidate the NIP.
